Breastfeeding for Breast Cancer Awareness

Posted by Heather Hamilton on March 08, 2012 0 Comments

I love breastfeeding. Not only has it been such a precious way to bond with my children, but it is convenient, inexpensive, eco-friendly and has a myriad of health benefits for both mom and baby. I am currently breastfeeding baby number 3 and although initiating breastfeeding with my newborn has gotten easier with each child, I haven’t escaped the soreness that comes in those first few weeks, and I even had a case of mastitis last week. Ugh!

A good nipple balm is a staple for the breastfeeding mama. I had my baby girl in July and finally had the opportunity to try Zoe Organics’ lovely Nipple Balm. I had formulated this product and recruited some of my breastfeeding friends to test it for me, but I was very excited to pack this product in my hospital bag to finally use myself.

The verdict? I was thrilled with it. I knew the ingredients were safe, so I didn’t have to worry about washing it off before breastfeeding, or of it causing a negative reaction or allergy. For my first child, my nurse at the hospital gave me a tube of lansinoh lanolin cream. It made me itch and it wasn’t until later that I realized what it was made from – oil from the wool of sheep. I don’t care what kind of refinement process this oil goes through, it is just not appealing to me (or my nipples). Zoe Organics Nipple Balm is made from premium 100% certified organic ingredients. The ingredients are simple and edible too!

  • Organic Olive Oil infused with calendula and marshmallow root
  • Organic and Fair Trade Cocoa Butter
  • Organic Avocado Oil
  • Organic Beeswax
The texture is smooth and creamy and it goes on easily. The pleasant, mild scent is unlike some other Nipple Balms I have sampled – you may even want to taste it . The relief it brought was undeniable. I used the product for approximately 3 weeks and had just less than half of the jar left. But I wasn’t able to waste this miracle balm. I used it on my recovering belly skin, as a midnight lip balm, and it even worked as a foot rub balm when my sweet husband rubbed my weary feet.
This month is breast cancer awareness month and I am moved by the heroic and heart wrenching stories of the women who have battled this disease. As I was reflecting on what we could do to help raise awareness and support this cause, I couldn’t help but think of the role my own breasts have had in nourishing my 3 children. I also know that breastfeeding helps to decrease the risk of breast cancer. So this month, in honor of the women who have battled – and continue to battle – breast cancer, Zoe Organics is giving 25% of all Nipple Balm sales to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
