My 8 year old daughter loves to cook and make crafts and is very tactile. She is always asking to make slime, but I'm not a big fan of slime ingredients. Play dough, on the other hand, is simple to make and uses kitchen staples that I can feel good about her playing with. We decided to make play dough for her to give to her 3rd grade class at their Christmas party, and we had a lot of fun taking a basic recipe and making it our own. If you are looking for an easy activity to do while your kids are home this holiday break, consider making this fun, scented play dough, using one of our essential oil blends to kick up the sensory enjoyment a notch.

Recipe:

2 cups white flour

1/2 cup table salt

2 tablespoons cream of tartar

2 tablespoons melted coconut oil

1 - 1 1/2 cups hot water

1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin

6 drops natural food coloring (optional)

1/2 teaspoon (biodegradable) craft glitter

10-15 drops Winter Blend or Refresh Blend

Directions:

1. Add dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and blend.

2. Add melted coconut oil and blend.

3. If you are adding food coloring, mix it into the hot water before adding it to the dry ingredients. Slowly add hot water to dry mixture while mixing. Dough will become sticky, but just keep mixing. Each batch we made used a different amount of water, so go slow. You can always add more. When it is cool enough, knead with hands.

4. Add the glycerin and essential oils to the dough and knead well with hands.

5. Add glitter and knead until dispersed well throughout the dough.

6. Store in an air tight container in the fridge when not playing with it. It should last for months. If it becomes dry, add hot water a few drops at a time until softened.
